Religion, Ethnicity and Migration in the Burmese-Thai borderlands SAM2157
This course will provide an introduction to religion, ethnicity and migration in the Burmese-Thai borderlands. The course will provide analytical tools for understanding majority-minority relations in Myanmar and Thailand, both Buddhist majority states. The course will also introduce the students to political conflicts in Myanmar and the role of cross-border migration and transnational identities in the Thai-Burmese borderlands.
The course is built around active participation in the classroom and during field excursions. The students will learn through a multi-sensory learning program.
The course is a special course under the academic exchange program of the MF Norwegian School of Theology and the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT) and is open to MiT, MF and MCD students only. The course is open to MA students, and second and third year bachelor students.
The course will take place at McGilvary College of Divinity (MCD), in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand), in close collaboration with Myanmar Institute of Theology.
The course is organized around lectures and seminar provided by MIT, MF and MCD staff.
Studiekrav
- Participate in all teaching activities at the MCD campus in Chiang Mai during the 10 days intensive course.
- Team up with a learning partner during the stay in Chiang Mai.
- Participate in field visits and excursions during the stay in Chiang Mai.
- Submit a summary of reading material (approximately 500 words) during second week of intensive course. The reading material will be further specified.
- Submit and have approved the outline of an essay of 2500-3500 words, which must be approved by the professor. The length of the outline is approximately 500 words.
- Participate in the in-depth evaluation of the course if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term
Avsluttende vurdering/eksamen
To gain credit for the course you must fulfil all the requirements (above). When course requirements are not fulfilled this will count as one examination attempt, unless you withdraw within the set deadline.
The final grade will be based on the final draft of the essay (2500-3500 words). The first draft of this must be submitted within the given deadline in order to meet the course requirement. The course is assessed with pass/fail.
