Generell informasjon

This course will provide an introduction to religion, ethnicity and conflict in Myanmar, and the roles of the churches in relation to religious and political conflicts in Myanmar.
The course is a special course under the academic exchange program of the MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society and the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT) and is open to MF students only.
The Intensive Course will take place at the campus of Myanmar Institute of Theology campus, Insein (Yangon), Myanmar. The course is organized around lectures and seminar provided by MIT staff.
This course is (in an adjusted form) also an elective master course, SAM5152. Students who have completed SAM2152 as part of their bachelor degree, may not include SAM5152 as part of their master degree.


Participation is compulsory at MIT during the 10 days intensive course.
The student will also:
  • submit a summary of reading material (500 words) during second week of intensive course. The reading material will be further specified.
  • submit the outline of an essay of 2000-2500 words, which must be approved by the professor.
  • team up with a learning partner

Avsluttende vurdering

To gain credit for the course the student must fulfill all the ncourse requirements and write an essay (2000-2500 words). The course is assessed with grades A-F.
When course requirements are not fulfilled, this will count as one examination attempt, unless the student withdraws within the set deadline.

Læringsutbytte etter fullført emne

The student has
  • good knowledge of key aspects of the Buddhist-Christian encounter in colonial Myanmar.
  • good knowledge of state-religion relations in contemporary Myanmar.
  • good knowledge of religious and ethnic identities in contemporary Myanmar.
  • knowledge of the diverse roles of religion in violent political conflicts in contemporary Myanmar.
  • knowledge of Christian contextual theology in Myanmar.
  • knowledge of relevant theories on the actual and potential role of religion in conflict transformation, conflict resolution, peace building and reconciliation, including gender perspectives on reconciliation and peace building.
The student can
  • discuss the various dimensions of colonial and postcolonial history of religion in Myanmar.
  • identify and discuss state-religion relations in Myanmar.
  • identify and analyse concrete examples the role of religion in violent political conflicts in Myanmar today.
  • analyse contextual theology in Myanmar today
  • discuss the various dimensions of interreligious relations and cooperation in conflicts, and in peace and reconciliation efforts, including gender perspectives.
