Generell informasjon

The course will investigate the role of religiosity and the churches in fragile democracies and situations of social fragmentation and instability, and address how they may play a role in protecting precious and precarious lives. The course will address citizenship, migration and diversity in Brazil (Latin America) and Norway (Europe), having gender, ethnicity and religious pluralism as transversal dimensions. It will address the role(s) religiosity in general and churches in particular play or could play with regard to ethical dimensions of vulnerability and plurality. It will also address religiosity as a resource or hindrance for citizenship and political participation in both global and regional contexts, from the perspective of these two countries and regions (Latin America/ Europe). The relevance and status of public theology and liberation theologies in these situations will be explored.
 
This joint course between Faculdades EST (EST) and MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society (MF), involves students and professors from both institutions. Part one will be held at EST in São Leopoldo, Brazil, and part two at MF in Oslo, Norway. Enrolment to part one is limited. Students who do not participate in part one, are still invited to take the full course.
Course activities include careful reading of assigned texts, seminar presentations and discussions, and relevant excursions.
 
This bachelor course is taught jointly with SAM 5151, and will give 10 study points reduction in relation to this course at Master's level. 

Studiekrav

The students who participate in part one (Brazil), will
  • be present at minimum 75 % of the teaching (includes lectures, seminars and excursions), both in Norway and Brazil.
  • present an abstract, including an outline and a tentative bibliography, for the final working paper to be discussed in class or group. The abstract must be approved by the professor.
  • participate in the evaluation of the course if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant semester.
 
The students who do not participate in part one, will
  • be present at minimum 75 % of the teaching (includes lectures, seminars and excursions) offered in Norway.
  • present an abstract, including an outline and a tentative bibliography, for the final working paper to be discussed in class or group. The abstract must be approved by the professor.
  • write an essay based on the course literature to be agreed by the teacher with the course responsibility.
  • participate in the evaluation of the course if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant semester.
 
When course requirements are not fulfilled, this will count as one examination attempt, unless you withdraw within the set deadline (1 May / 1 November).

Avsluttende vurdering

A final, working paper of 2,000-2,500 words on a topic approved by the professor. The exam is assessed with grades A-F.

The student has:
  • good knowledge of the role of religiosity and the churches in contemporary political, social and democratic processes in Brazil and Norway.
  • good knowledge of recent academic reflection on precariousness and vulnerability, in particular as it relates to the role of religion in society.
  • knowledge of global challenges related to citizenship, migration and diversity.
 
 
SKILLS
The student can:
  • analyse, discuss critically and apply different positions and theories regarding the role of religion in society on particular political fields, including poverty, migration and social exclusion.
  • identify key dilemmas and challenges in the interrelationship between religiosity and social, political and cultural developments in Brazil and Norway/Europe.
  • analyse and discuss critically concepts such as ¿the precariat¿, ¿vulnerability¿ and ¿public theology¿.
