Generell informasjon

Exfac is divided into two parts of 5 ECTS each:
 
Part A: Introduction to philosophy of science and academic writing
This part of the course introduces the students to the understanding of science and research in the humanities as an academic discipline, and to scientific methods. A further goal is to train the students in academic writing and to help students become critical thinkers.
 
Part B: Theology as an academic discipline
This part of the course introduces students an understanding of theology as an academic discipline, in relation to other sciences and academic disciplines. What makes theology academic? How is the relation between faith and history to be understood? What is the relation between faith and reason? What is the role of the Bible in theology? The course will introduce different positions on these questions, for the students to engage with.

Studiekrav

  • Submit on Canvas and receive approval for one essay (2000-2500 words) by the due date (see the syllabus for details on the topic of the essay and the due date).The essay must include correctly formulated references and a separate bibliography.
  • Take part in a minimum of 75% of the lectures
  • Participate in the evaluation of the curriculum and/or of the learning environment, if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term.

Avsluttende vurdering

Final assessment for this course is a 4-hour written exam. This course is graded on a scale of A-F.

Part A: Introduction to philosophy of science and academic writing
KNOWLEDGE
The student has:
  • knowledge of the relation between language and reality
  • knowledge of hermeneutics
  • knowledge of scientific methods
  • knowledge of the requirements for good academic writing
 
SKILLS
The student can:
  • discuss what science is, based on knowledge about traditions in the philosophy of science
  • discuss the relation between language and reality
  • write an independent academic paper at the bachelor level, with correctly formatted references and bibliography
 
Part B: Theology as an academic discipline
KNOWLEDGE
The student has:
  • knowledge of the concept of theology as an academic discipline
  • knowledge of philosophical presuppositions for theological work
  • knowledge of the different sub-disciplines of theology: biblical studies, history, systematic theology, practical theology
 
SKILLS
The students can:
  • discuss the relation between theology and other academic disciplines
  • discuss the relation between the different sub-disciplines of theology
  • discuss the normative aspects of theology
