MF CASR Lunch with Christian Bull

Distorting Plato in Christian Egypt

27.04.2021 - 11:30 til 12:00

Textual remains of Greek philosophers dwindle to almost nothing in the fourth century, at the same time as Christian texts in Coptic start to multiply. The only Coptic translation of Plato is a small excerpt in the Nag Hammadi Codices, consisting mostly of heterodox Christian scriptures. In his talk, Christian Bull will discuss the strange modifications of Plato’s text in the Coptic translation, in the context of the general demise of Greek philosophy in Christian Egypt.

Christian Bull is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at MF School of Theology, Religion and Society.
