Min hovedinteresse er religioner fra hellenistisk tid, romersk keisertid, og senantikken, og da spesielt møter mellom forskjellige religiøse tradisjoner. Jeg har fokusert mest på Egypt, og møtet mellom tradisjonell Egyptisk religion og gresk kultur og filosofi slik det kommer til uttrykk i de såkalte hermetiske skriftene. Et tilknyttet forskningsfelt er tidlig kristendom i Egypt, og da spesielt de koptiske Nag Hammadi-skriftene, og andre apokryfe og gnostiske tekster. Jeg arbeider også med munkevesenet, senantikk platonisme, magi, alkymi, astrologi og universell historiografi. Mine teoretiske interesser omfatter temaene myte, rite, opplevelse, kulturelt minne, og makt.
