Language of Instruction

Master in Diaconia is offered in collaboration with VID Specialized University.

The master's program in Diaconia and Christian Social Practice is directed towards social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, social educators, teachers, or others with a bachelor's degree or equivalent in health, social, or educational training that desire to be involved with health care, diaconia, aid, and missions. The master's programme in diaconia gives the students insight into the church's diaconal ministry. The study program also aims towards developing skills and attitudes that are relevant to the practice of diaconia.

This is pursued through instruction in the following subjects:

  • The Biblical and theological basis for diaconia
  • Introduction to the science of diaconia
  • Counselling
  • Method
  • Diaconal Work
  • Ethics and Values
  • Leadership in Culture and Society
  • Diaconia in a global context
  • An elective subject of in-depth study of 10 ECTS, with relevance to the understanding of diaconal practise.

During the time of study there are 2 internship periods. A three-week internship in a church and a four-week in-depth internship in an institution, organisation or in an international mission or NGO.

Employment Possibilities
Upon completion of the master's program, the students are qualified for and can work as a deacon in the Church of Norway. Other denominations also have deacons. Competency as a deacon responds to needs for quality care and leadership within organisations and institutions both in the Church landscape and in society at large, both nationally and internationally. This study program also qualifies for further study on a Ph.D. level.
