Bachelor in Theology, Religion and Society 

General admission requirements are described on the GSU-list. Applicants have to meet the general admission requirements (except proficiency in Norwegian) in order to be eligible for admission.
​Note that MF requires a higher level of English proficiency than the GSU list, equivalent to grade 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school. Details about this requirement and equivalency with language tests will be published before the next admission period starts November 1st 2021. Applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements will be ranked according to their academic level.

Master in History of Religions

  • Bachelor’s degree from an internationally recognized institution. Applicants who complete a bachelor degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with diploma and transcript of records.
  • A combination of relevant religious studies and history credits: A minimum of 80 ECTS credits including specialization in one subject area, and a minimum of 20 ECTS credits in the other subject area.
  • A minimum average grade of C overall and in the specialization subject area.
  • All applicants must document their proficiency in English. Please see the GSU-list. Note that MF requires a higher level of English proficiency than the GSU list, equivalent to grade 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school. Details about this requirement and equivalency with language tests will be published before the next admission period starts November 1st 2021.
  • A statement of interest: In a statement of 200-400 words, applicants should describe their interest and experience in the academic study of history and religion and inform the admissions office of their reasons for considering a graduate education in History of Religions.

Additional Information Concerning Requirements for Admission:
By “relevant religious studies credits” we mean the study of religion as cultural and historical phenomena explored in fields such as religious studies, history of religion, sociology of religion, anthropology of religion, and academic biblical studies. Other academic studies of religion, such as theology and interdisciplinary studies may also be relevant, and will be considered individually.

By “relevant history credits” we mean studies that focus on the history of the premodern world (political history, social history, archaeology, ancient languages, and art history). Other studies that provide skills to work with ancient evidence can also be relevant and will be considered individually. These might include studies in the humanities such as historiography, history of ideas, and philosophy. The application for admission should document basic knowledge of multiple religious traditions and research methods.

Master in Religion in Contemporary Society

A Bachelor’s degree or a period of study comparable with a Norwegian Bachelor's degree from a recognized Higher Education institution. The degree must have a combination of relevant social sciences and religious studies: A minimum of 80 ECTS credits including specialisation in one subject area, and a minimum of 20 ECTS credits in the other subject area and an average grade equivalent to Norwegian C level (British Second class, upper division). Applicants who complete a bachelor degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with diploma and transcript of records.

A Bachelor's degree (or a period of study comparable with a Norwegian Bachelor's degree from a recognized Higher Education institution) in Theology or Religious Studies, with an average grade equivalent to Norwegian C level (British Second class, upper division). A minimum of 80 ECTS must be in Christian theology. General admission requirements (except proficiency in Norwegian). Applicants who complete a bachelor degree before July 1st can apply, but the application will not be considered before the completed degree is documented with a diploma and transcript of records.
