My research focuses on Indian politics and society, particularly the linkages between politics, caste, and religion.
In my doctoral research (UiO, 2018) I studied the local mobilisation, organisation and performances of political activists in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a Dalit party, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. I showed how in the face of limitations of gender, caste and class, BSP activists build networks and establish their credentials through creatively drawing upon a rich reservoir of performative practices.
I am currently a postdoctoral fellow on the project MYTHOPOLITICS (The Lifetimes of Powerful Stories: Mythopolitics in South Asia, NRC) where I study the use and production of myth in contemporary Indian politics, with an emphasis on Hindu nationalist mobilization and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
