IT Support

Welcome to our IT Support page. Here we will try to answer some of the most common questions we get.

Students who need more help, please ask IT Support (student assistents) located in the corner next to the reception in the library. They are usually available 10-17 Monday - Friday, and on some Saturdays. Ask the library reception if you can't find them.

IT Support can help you with:

  • Internet connection on laptops and mobile devices
  • Simple Word formatting questions
  • Printing from the computer lab or from your laptop
  • Refilling paper and toner in printers and copy machines
  • Questions about Canvas and Studentweb usage

If you're an employee at MF and need IT support, please contact the IT department directly.

Username / password

Username / password

At MF you will get your own user account with a password. This user name and password can be used to log in to multiple web services, like WiFi, Canvas, StudentWeb, BIBSYS Oria and Feide. 

In order to access these services you will need to find your login credentials and activate your user account, otherwise you will not be able to use the library computers, the copy machine or the printers. 

To have full access (for example to access the course rooms on Canvas) you will also have to:

After doing this it will take one day before you will have access to all your rooms in Canvas. The semester fee payment will not be registered at MF until a couple of days have passed.

New student

  1. Bring your ID
  2. Get login credentials in the student reception.
    The student reception can be found on the 2nd floor on your right hand side when going up the main staircase. Its open from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. 
  3. Read and accept the regulations and activate your user account at https://activate.mf.no 
  4. After about 10 minutes your account should be activated. Now you can change your password at https://intranett.stud.mf.no/

You may also send an email to student@mf.no to have your login credentials sent to you by regular mail or SMS. Make sure your information on StudentWeb is correct, in order for the information to be sent to the right adress or phone number. We will not send the credentials to the adress or phone number you specify in the email, and we will not give out login credentials by phone or e-mail.

Problems logging in to Canvas

Problems logging in to Canvas

If you have problems logging in to Canvas:

  • Are you on the correct Canvas web site? Each school has their own Canvas, make sure you didn't accidentally visit another school's Canvas (the green box in the screenshot below).
    MF's Canvas is found on the address https://mf.instructure.com, you can also find a link to our Canvas on the bottom of this web site.
  • Also make sure you selected "MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society" as your institution (Blue box in the screenshot).
    If another school is shown there, click on the "Not your affiliation?" link to go back to the selection screen.

Private/Incognito mode

If you still cannot log in, you can try to open Private/Incognito mode in your browser, it will then ignore all previous settings and act as if you are on the web site for the first time:

  • In Firefox:
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + P
    • Alternatively: Menu > "New private window..."
  • In Google Chrome:
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + N
    • Alternatively: Menu > "New incognito window"
  • In Safari (on Mac):
    • File > "New Private Window"

You could also try using another browser to achieve the same effect.

OBS: Some of the details in the troubleshooting diagram may not apply to all international students! If you are not certain, please ask in the student reception.

E-mail

E-mail

Every student will get an @stud.mf.no-address, which will be activated along with your MF account. Read here for instructions.

Note that this e-mail address will forward all your e-mails to your private e-mail account registered in StudentWeb. Therefore you will not find any e-mails in your @stud.mf.no-account.

If you do not recieve e-mails, check this:

  • Did you activate your account?
  • Did you spell your e-mail adress correctly in StudentWeb?
  • Did you check the spam folder in your private e-mail account?
  • If you did not register an e-mail adress at StudentWeb your e-mail will be sent to your @stud.mf.no-account. Log on to the webmail and check there.

Note that activating your account or putting a private e-mail adress in StudentWeb late in the semester will not have a retroactive effect, so any old e-mails sent before your account activation will not be received.

Use "user name"@mf.no for connecting to the WiFi

WiFi

The wireless network at MF is called eduroam.

This is a system used by most universities in Norway and in many other contries. By using your MF account you can log on to the eduroam WiFi network on other universities or other institutions who has eduroam access, for example airports.

If you do not know your login credentials you must get this at MF and activate your account. Read here for more instructions... 

Connecting to eduroam

The best way to connect is to use the eduroam configurator before you go to MF and are connected to another network:

  1. Go to https://cat.eduroam.org/ on the laptop, Macbook, tablet or phone that you want to connect to eduroam at MF
  2. Search for "MF Norwegian School of Theology" 
  3. Follow the instructions given to you and download and run the configurator.
  4. Important: You have to use "your username"@mf.no as your username to connect to eduroam. (Please note that this is not the same as your email address.)

You may also download the configurator on a different computer (for example a student computer at MF) and transfer the file to your computer by using at memmory stick. In that case, remember to chose "Different operating system" when you download the file.

Manual configuration

If the configurator for some reason do not work properly you can try to connect manually:

SSID: eduroam
Security: WPA2 Enterprise
User name: Your MF user name@mf.no
Password: Your MF password

 

The following settings should usually be selected automatically, but you may have to set this manually in some cases:

EAP-method: Protected EAP (PEAP)
Authentication methods: EAP-MSCHAP v2
Certificate: "DigiCert Assured ID Root CA" or "No certificate"

 

If  you are having problems connecting you can ask the IT helpdesk in the library. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. 

Office 365

Office 365

All our students and employees can use Office 365 without extra cost. This means that you can install and use Word, Excel and Powerpoint both in the web browser, on mobile devices (tablets and smartphones), and our license also includes free installation of the Office software on Windows and Mac.

Important note: After activating your MF account, it might take up to two days before the Office 365 license is assigned to your user. If you get an error message when logging in, try again in a day or two.

Instructions for logging on

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com
  2. Write your MF email address (you can find it on the student intranet) and click Sign in:
  3. Press enter, you should be redirected to a new page:
  4. You'll get two choices. Pick "Feide":
  5. You should then be forwarded to the Feide login page. Log in using your MF username and password:
  6. You should now be logged in to Office 365. Click on "Install now" if you want to install Office on your computer.

Save as PDF

Save as PDF

In Word and PowerPoint you can save files in PDF format without any extra software.

To do this:

  1. Open up the Word or PowerPoint file you want to convert to PDF
  2. Choose File > Save As
  3. Choose the folder you want to save the file in, either using the quick choices on the right, or by using the Browse... option
  4. Below the file name there's an option to choose file type. Click on it to show the dropdown menu and select PDF
  5. Write a new file name if you want, and click on Save

PS: The original Word or PowerPoint file will still be there, they will not disappear when you convert a file to PDF format.

Grammarly

Grammarly

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is an app/extension that helps with your English writing. Grammarly finds and corrects complex writing errors in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and spelling. You will also get suggestions on how you can improve your text. Grammarly can be used across multiple devices, browsers, and apps.

How do I get access?

As a student on an English study programme at MF, you will get a Grammarly invite by email. (your @stud.mf.no email-address should forward it to your private email)  Click on the link in the email, and follow the instructions. After registration, you can install extensions to Chrome, Word, etc. 

Print, copy and scan

You can print from:

  • Student computers at MF (Remember to log in with your own account! If you use a computer that is already logged in for another student, you will not be able to print.)
  • Your private laptop
  • USB memory stick. (Only PDF and pictures)

In order to print you have to

When you activate your account you will receive 100 NOK on your printing account, and then you will receive 100 NOK quarterly. More information about prices and refilling your printing account... 

To connect your card to your printing account

  1. Print something from one of the student computers (You must have logged in to Windows with your own account!)
  2. You should receive the printing code in an e-mail on your private e-mail address registered on StudentWeb. Check your spam folder if you can't find the e-mail. 
  3. Go to the big Canon copy machine in the Media room in the library. (The room by the lockers with movies.)
  4. Important: First swipe your card in the reader on the right side of the copy machine
  5. Then type in the code given to you in the e-mail.  (If you do this in the wrong order, the card will not be registered and you won't be able to use it for printing.)
  6. Now your card should be registered and can be used on all printers and copy machines. You will not have to use your code after this. 

Scanning

You can use the copy machine in the media room in the library (where you can find movies) to scan to:

  • e-mail (Chose scan "To me", this will send the scanning to your private e-mail adress registered on StudentWeb
  • USB memory stick

Note that scanning many pages or scanning with high quality might create files too large to be sent by e-mail. Use a memory stick in that case.

Scanning with text recognition (OCR - optical character recognition)

The copy machine also supports text recognition, so you can scan text to a Word document.

  1. Press the File Format button
    Select the File Format button on the printer screen.
  2. You'll get a list of file formats (the options may be slightly different on our machine).

    Select Word.
  5. Change the language to the correct one if it is wrong.
  6. Press OK, then scan your documents like usual.

Printing from Windows | Printing from Mac

It is possible to print to the Uniflow/Followme-printer from your own PC or Mac.

Remember:

Please note that the screenshots are in Norwegian, but the icons and windows should look the same in the English version of Windows and Mac.

Printing from Windows

The screenshots were taken on Windows 10, but the same procedure should work on Windows 7 and 8 as well.

  1. Press Win + R to open the "Run" window.
  2. Write \\uniflow.stud.mf.no and press OK

  3. You will be asked about username and password, use your MF account (same username and password as Canvas/Feide).

  4. You will get a list of printers. Doubleclick on the printer named FollowMe.
  5. The window of the Uniflow-server with printers list.
  6. The printer will now be installed, that will take a few minutes.
  7. Then you will be able to print to the printer FollowMe and retrieve printouts with your students card in the usual way. Remember, if your student card is not connected to your printing account yet, it must be done the first time you print.

Printing from Mac

  1. Open System Preferences and click on "Printers and Scanners."

  2. Click the plus sign at the bottom left to add a new printer.

  3. The window should be opened to add new printers. To get the "Advanced" option, hold down Ctrl, click on the toolbar and select "Customize toolbar ..." (If you already have the "Advanced" button there, you can jump to point 5.)

  4. Drag the "Advanced" button from the new window into toolbar and then press "Done".

  5. Press the Advanced button and select the following options:
    Type: LPD/LPR host or printer
    Device: Other device
    URL: lpd://username@uniflow.stud.mf.no/FollowmeMAC - Note: replace username with your own MF username, the same one you use in Canvas
    Name: Followme (or what do you want, can write anything)
    Place: MF (or blank, can write anything here too)
    Use: Generic PostScript-printer

  6. Press "Add"
  7. Check the box for "Duplex Unit" and press OK

  8. Then you will be able to print to the printer FollowMe and retrieve printouts with your students card in the usual way. Remember, if your student card is not connected to your printing account yet, it must be done the first time you print.

PS: If you make any changes to the printer setup on your Mac, this may cause your username to be lost from the Followme printer's configuration, so your printouts will not reach the printer. In this case, remove the Followme printer and reinstall it by following these instructions again.

Subscribe to the schedule

  1. Go to TimeEdit to search for your schedule. Click "Schedule"
  2. Optional: If you want to se lectures and events from earlier in the semester you have to change the start date. (1 in the drawing)
      
  3. Click subscribe on the button on the right of the page. (2 in the drawing)
  4. Make sure that the entire semester is selected in the "Time" option:
  5. Now you can copy the URL and paste it in the suitable place in your calendar system. The following instruction is based on Google calendar, which we can recommend.  
  6. Log in on your Google account and go to the Calendar.  Alternatively you can type calendar.google.com and follow the instructions for logging in. 
  7. On the left side, click on "Add a friend's calendar," then. on "From URL" in the pop-up menu:
  8. Paste the URL you copied in point 5 in Time Edit. Click "Add calendar"
  9. We recommend that you change the name of the calendar. Click on the 3 black dots by your new calendar og chose "Settings" to change the name or do other changes.

Calendar / iCal

  • Calendars which you are subscribing can also be awailable on your iPhone or iPad .

How to synchronize your calendar with smartphones

  • Android smart phones. If you have synced your phone with a Google account (which most people do), your calendar subscriptions should be automaticly syncronised into the calendar on the phone. In the calendar application you can choose which calendars to be syncronized and shown. There is also a TimeEdit application made by a norwegian student you can download: http://www.tobbentm.com/timeedit.
  • iPhone (and iPad) should be possible to syncronize with iCloud (Mac), Google Calendar, Microsoft Live Calendar og Yahoo Calendar
  • Windows smart phones should automaticly sync with the calendars you have subscribed to in Live Calendar if you have used the same Hotmail/Outlook account to set up your phone. 

Antivirus software

Antivirus product on private computers

It is strongly recommended to have updated antivirus-software on all computers. From 2016 MF no longer provides you with free antivirus.

Some internet providers or banks includes either free or cheap antivirus software for their customers: DnB, Telenor bredbånd, NextGenTel. Please check your own internet provider's or bank's web site for more information.

Suggestions for antivirus-software is listed in the table under payed products generally gives more protection, the free solutions will show comersial for upgrade/pay-up to "pro" versjonene and demand registration. How good they are can change by the week, please use external references  to choose what is best for you.
