Professor Esack will hold the lecture: "Islam, Freedom and Rights: An Islamic Perspective on Political Participation"
Farid Esack is professor in Islamic Studies at University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Esack is a well known for his contributions in public debate on islam, gender, equality, liberation theology, inter-religious dialogue, and questions concerning Palestine. He was helped form the Muslim anti-apartheid group Muslims Against Oppression in South Africa, and was later appointment by Nelson Mandela as a gender equity commissioner. Esack has continued his political commitment, both nationally and internationally. He is particularly engaged in solidarity work for Palestine and battle against the isralei occupation.
