Sami Al-Daghistani (PhD, 2017, Islamic Studies, Leiden University, co-supervision at Columbia University) is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society, an Associate Faculty at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, and a Research Scholar at the Middle East Institute at Columbia University. His teaching and research focus on Islamic intellectual history, especially on the intersection of economic and environmental thought, ethics, law, and epistemology, and Islam and modernity. Sami's project explores the concept of sustainability in classical Islamic milieu.
Sami has published on Islamic legal and economic thought, and edited two books on the Second Gulf War (2010) and on Middle Eastern culture (2013). He published two book translations from Arabic - Ibn Battuta's Rihla and Ibn Tufayl's Hay ibn Yaqzan. His forthcoming monographs are Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’'s Ethical Teachings: Economics of Happiness (Anthem Press, 2020), The Making of Islamic Economic Thought (Cambridge University Press, 2021), and Pluralism in Emergenc(i)es (Cambridge University Press/Review of Middle East Studies, 2021).
