SAM5146: Religion and Development

This course will introduce the students to development theory and on-going debates regarding the relationship between religion and development. Perspectives will be drawn from religious studies, development studies, international relations and the study of civil society and faith-based organisations. Both the role of religion in development and more specifically the role of religion in development aid will be addressed. The course will enable the students to better understand the role of religion in so-called developing countries and in international development cooperation.
Students who are not enrolled in the Master Programme Religion, Society and Global Issues, should have equivalent academic background.
This course is (in an adjusted form) also an elective bachelor course, SAM2540. Students who have completed SAM2540 as part of their bachelor degree, may not include SAM5146 as part of their master degree.
To complete the course, the student has to:
- Write an essay 1,200 - 2,000 words on a topic given by the professor. The essay must be approved by the professor.
- Participate in the evaluation of the curriculum, if such evaluation is stipulated in the relevant term.
When course requirements are not fulfilled this will count as one examination attempt, unless you withdraw within the set deadline (1 May/ 1 November).
In semesters when the course is not taught, the students are not expected to write the essay.
In order to pass SAM5146 the student must fulfil all the requirements and write an essay (4000-4400 words) on a topic given by the professor. The essay is assessed with grades (A-F).

The student has:
- A thorough knowledge of development theories
- A thorough knowledge of the role of religion in development thought and development practice
- A good knowledge of selected types of development aid and development aid actors
- A good knowledge of political and normative issues related to international cooperation
- A good knowledge of key topics within contemporary development research
The student can:
- analyse and discuss critically the concept and history of «development»
- analyse and discuss critically the different positions and theories regarding the role of religion in development and faith-based actors in development aid
- identify key dilemmas and challenges in the interrelationship between religiosity and social, political and cultural development worldwide
- apply relevant theories on the role of religion in development on different political fields, including health, education, economy, culture, gender and reproductive rights.
